Faire La Fête Crémant de Limoux

Disclaimer: The Faire La Fête Crémant de Limoux was provided to us as a review sample.

We wrote about Crémant last year. In that case it was about a wine from Alsace. Today we move South to the foothills of the Pyrenees and the Limoux area. Limoux is part of the Languedoc region. It was here in 1531 that fermentation in bottle to make a sparkling wine was first recorded. Thus Limoux Crémant predates Champagne by about half a century.

The Faire La Fête Crémant de Limoux is 70% Chardonnay, 20% Chenin Blanc, and 10% Pinot Noir. Missing from this particular wine is the region’s traditional grape: Mauzac. Known locally as Blanquette, this grape must make up at least 15% of still white wines from the region. As is often the case with sparkling wines, there is no vintage associated with this Crémant

Tasting the wine

Pouring the wine into the glass, I saw tight energetic bubbles. The flavour is primarily of crisp green apples. The fruit sustains through the finish in which a hint of salinity emerges.

The wine was a delight to drink. Light in body, with a simple fruit forward flavour. That fruit makes it a sparkling wine to drink as is. I would not recommend it as a base for a Mimosa; too tasty in its own right. I do not know what role the Chenin Blanc plays in imparting the fruit flavours, but I am eager to try other Crémant wines from Limoux.

Conclusion

The wine sells for $21 at wine.com. Given our enjoyment of this wine, this seems a fair price. Faire La Fête translates from French as “to party” and this a good sparkling wine with which to celebrate.
